SAS and SATA Backplanes for Enterprise Servers

A drive backplane is the passive or active PCB mounted at the front of the server chassis that connects hot-swap drive bays to the server’s SAS HBA, RAID controller, or direct SAS backplane connector. When a backplane fails, drives become inaccessible regardless of the drives’ own health — making backplane availability a critical spare part for production servers.
Backplanes are chassis-specific: a backplane for an R640 8-port SFF configuration is not compatible with the R640 10-port SFF configuration. When ordering, confirm your exact PowerEdge model, chassis generation, and drive bay configuration (e.g., 8 x 2.5" SFF, 10 x 2.5" SFF, 12 x 3.5" LFF). The part number from your existing backplane (visible on a label attached to the backplane board) is the most reliable way to confirm compatibility.

Backplane Compatibility and Selection Guide
Backplanes are not universal — they are matched to a specific chassis SKU and drive count. The same server model (e.g., R640) ships with multiple chassis configurations that use different backplanes. Before ordering a replacement backplane, confirm these three variables:
- Server model and generation — e.g., Dell PowerEdge R640 14th gen
- Drive bay configuration — e.g., 8 x 2.5" SFF, 10 x 2.5" SFF (includes 2 rear bays), or mixed SFF/NVMe
- Original Dell part number — printed on a label attached to the existing backplane board (e.g., 0XXXXX format for Dell)
SAS backplanes connect to the server’s RAID controller (PERC H740P, H730P) via SAS expander cables. SATA backplanes connect directly to the motherboard SATA controller or a SATA HBA. Backplanes with NVMe support include a PCIe signal path alongside the SAS/SATA connections and require a compatible riser and controller configuration in the host server.

- The most reliable method is the Dell part number from your existing backplane, visible on a label on the board itself. Alternatively, identify your server’s service tag and look up the original backplane part number in Dell’s online parts catalog.
