Proxmox Subscriptions & Pricing

Enterasource is an authorized Proxmox reseller that also sells turnkey enterprise server hardware. Buy your subscription and your server from the same vendor — pre-installed, configured, tested, and shipped with a 2-year warranty.

Turnkey Proxmox Servers — Ready to Deploy

Enterasource delivers Proxmox servers that work out of the box. Order a refurbished Dell PowerEdge or HPE ProLiant server configured to your specs, and we pre-install Proxmox VE with your chosen subscription tier before it ships. Every server goes through our testing lab with a multi-point hardware diagnostic, so what arrives at your door is a production-ready virtualization host — not a bare chassis you still need to set up.

Buy your Proxmox subscription and your server from the same vendor. Configure the server, select the Proxmox subscription tier, and check out in a single order.

Proxmox Virtual Environment (VE) Subscription Pricing

Proxmox VE subscriptions are priced per CPU socket, per year. A single-socket server requires one subscription. A dual-socket server requires two. All tiers include the complete Proxmox VE feature set, Enterprise Repository access for stable and tested updates, and security patches. Higher tiers add more support tickets and faster response times from the Proxmox engineering team.

Tier 1 CPU Socket / Year 2 CPU Sockets / Year 4 CPU Sockets / Year Support Tickets Response Time
Community $136 $271 $543 Community forum only N/A
Basic $419 $838 $1,676 3 per year 1 business day
Standard $625 $1,251 $2,502 10 per year 4 hours (business hours)
Premium $1,251 $2,502 $5,003 Unlimited 2 hours (business hours)

What Every VE Subscription Includes

  • Enterprise Repository access — stable, tested updates for production environments
  • Complete feature set — no features are locked behind higher tiers
  • Security patches and updates — delivered through the Enterprise Repository
  • Customer portal access — manage subscriptions, open support tickets, track renewals

Standard & Premium Also Include

  • Remote support via SSH — Proxmox engineers can connect directly for troubleshooting
  • Offline subscription key activation — for air-gapped or restricted-network environments
  • Datacenter Manager Enterprise Repository and support

Proxmox Backup Server Pricing

Proxmox Backup Server (PBS) is a dedicated backup solution for Proxmox VE environments. It supports incremental backups, client-side encryption, and content-based deduplication for virtual machines, containers, and physical hosts. PBS subscriptions are priced per backup server per year — no limits on backup clients, storage capacity, or backup jobs.

Tier Price / Year (Per Server) Support Tickets Response Time
Community $637 Community forum only N/A
Basic $1,274 5 per year 1 business day
Standard $2,549 15 per year 4 hours (business hours)
Premium $5,098 Unlimited 2 hours (business hours)

PBS pricing is per backup server with unlimited backup clients and unlimited storage capacity. Pair with a high-capacity Dell PowerEdge R740xd or R750xs for a dedicated backup appliance.

Proxmox Mail Gateway Pricing

Proxmox Mail Gateway (PMG) is an open-source email security solution that filters spam, viruses, and phishing before messages reach your mail server. PMG subscriptions are priced per host per year with unlimited users and unlimited domains — no per-mailbox fees.

Tier Price / Year (Per Host) Support Tickets Response Time
Community $212 Community forum only N/A
Basic $602 5 per year 1 business day
Standard $1,428 15 per year 4 hours (business hours)
Premium $2,124 Unlimited 2 hours (business hours)

PMG pricing is per host with unlimited users and unlimited domains. Most deployments run PMG as a virtual appliance on an existing Proxmox VE cluster.

How Proxmox Licensing Works

Proxmox uses per-socket pricing for VE, per-server pricing for Backup Server, and per-host pricing for Mail Gateway. There are no per-VM, per-core, or per-user fees. Every subscription tier unlocks the same complete feature set — the only differences between tiers are the number of support tickets and response time.

Per-Socket vs. Per-Host Pricing

Proxmox VE is licensed per physical CPU socket, not per core. A dual-socket Dell PowerEdge R640 with two 28-core Xeon processors requires a 2-CPU subscription — the same price regardless of whether those processors have 8 cores or 28 cores each. A single-socket server needs only one subscription. Proxmox Backup Server and Mail Gateway are simpler: one subscription per server or host, regardless of CPU count.

Enterprise Repository Access

Every paid subscription — Community tier and above — includes access to the Proxmox Enterprise Repository. The Enterprise Repository contains packages that have been tested for stability and compatibility before release, making it the recommended update source for production environments. Without a subscription, the No-Subscription Repository provides updates that have not been through the same testing process.

Subscription Key Activation

After purchase, you receive a subscription key that you activate through the Proxmox Customer Portal or directly in the Proxmox VE web interface. Standard and Premium subscriptions support offline key activation for environments without direct internet access. Each subscription key is tied to a specific server.

Switching from VMware to Proxmox?

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does Proxmox cost?+

Proxmox VE subscriptions start at $136/year for a single-CPU Community subscription and go up to $1,251/year for Premium. A dual-socket server requires two socket subscriptions, so double those prices. Proxmox Backup Server starts at $637/year per server. Proxmox Mail Gateway starts at $212/year per host. All tiers include the complete feature set — you are paying for Enterprise Repository access, support tickets, and response time.

How is Proxmox licensed — per core or per socket?+

Proxmox VE is licensed per physical CPU socket, not per core. A server with one CPU requires a 1-CPU subscription. A dual-socket server requires a 2-CPU subscription. The number of cores per processor does not affect the subscription price. Proxmox Backup Server is priced per server regardless of CPU count, and Mail Gateway is priced per host with unlimited users and domains.

What is the difference between Proxmox Community and Enterprise subscriptions?+

All Proxmox subscription tiers — Community, Basic, Standard, and Premium — include the same complete feature set and Enterprise Repository access. The differences are in support: Community provides no direct support (community forums only), Basic adds 3 tickets per year with 1-business-day response, Standard provides 10 tickets with 4-hour response, and Premium provides unlimited tickets with 2-hour response. Standard and Premium also include SSH remote support and offline key activation. Learn more in our detailed comparison guide.

Can I buy a server with Proxmox pre-installed?+

Yes. Enterasource is an authorized Proxmox reseller that also sells enterprise server hardware. When you configure a Dell PowerEdge or HPE ProLiant server on our site, you can add a Proxmox VE subscription at your chosen tier. We install and configure Proxmox on the server, test it in our lab, and ship it ready to deploy with a 2-year hardware warranty. Browse our server catalog or request a quote for a custom Proxmox server configuration.

Can I migrate from VMware to Proxmox?+

Yes, Proxmox VE supports importing VMware VMDK disk images and can convert VMware VMs for use on Proxmox. Organizations migrating from VMware to Proxmox typically reduce virtualization licensing costs by 80–95%. Enterasource can supply both the Proxmox subscriptions and the refurbished enterprise servers for your migration — configured, tested, and warranted. Contact our team to discuss your migration project.

What servers are compatible with Proxmox VE?+

Proxmox VE runs on any 64-bit x86 server with Intel VT-x or AMD-V virtualization support. All Dell PowerEdge servers from the 13th through 16th generation (R630/R730 through R660/R760) and all HPE ProLiant DL-series servers meet these requirements. For ZFS storage, the RAID controller should be configured in HBA/IT mode or replaced with a pass-through HBA. ECC memory is recommended, especially for ZFS and Ceph deployments. Enterasource can configure any of these options on your server.

How do I activate my Proxmox subscription key?+

After purchasing a subscription from Enterasource, you receive a subscription key via email. Log into the Proxmox Customer Portal at shop.proxmox.com, register your server, and enter the key. You can also activate directly from the Proxmox VE web interface under Datacenter > Subscription. Standard and Premium subscriptions support offline activation for servers without internet access. If you order a server with Proxmox pre-installed, we can activate the subscription before shipping.

Can I upgrade my Proxmox subscription tier?+

Yes. Contact Enterasource to upgrade from any tier to a higher one. We apply a prorated credit for the remaining time on your current tier toward the new subscription. Downgrades can be processed at the next renewal date.
